This makes it possible to split slate into thin sheets.

Fine slate can also be used as a whetstone to hone knives. Because of its thermal stability and chemical inertness, slate has been used for laboratory bench tops and for billiard table tops. In 18th and 19th century schools, slate was extensively used for blackboards and individual writing slates for which slate pencils were used.

Slate tiles are often used for interior and exterior flooring or wall cladding. Tiles are installed and set on mortar and grouted along the edges. Chemical sealants are often used on tiles to improve durability and appearance, increase stain resistance, reduce efflorence, and increase or reduce surface smoothness. Tiles are often sold gauged, meaning that the back surface is ground for ease of installation.

Its purpose is primarily to shed water off the building and to prevent it from accumulating on top. To achieve this goal, roofs may be highly pitched (sloped) or low sloped in form. Low sloped roofs are commonly found on industrial/commercial type structures. Pitched roofs are the primary design found on residential homes. The most common type of low sloped roof for industrial/commercial structures are the conventional built-up-roof (BUR), modified bitumen, or single plies (EPDM, PVC, TPO). Metal standing seam roofs are becoming increasingly common on low sloped roof assemblies.

Residential roof designs in mild climates or where there is little precipitation tend to exhibit lower pitched roofs and drainage at the exterior wall; an example of residential flat roof is that of the adobe construction in the American Southwest. In northern climates, where temperatures drop below freezing, or in southern climates with high temperatures, the need for greater thermal resistance will dictate the type of roof design as well as the waterproofing membrane specification. In areas that have a high accumulation of snow, such as Buffalo USA or Montreal Canada, a minimum slope of 6 inches in 12 inches (6/12) of roof surface is required. Roof pitches may exceed 45 or 50 degrees.

Cool roofs and green roofs are becoming increasingly popular, and in some cases are mandated by local codes. Cool roofs are defined as roofs with both high reflectivity and high emissivity. Green roofs have soil placed over the waterproofing membrane in which plants and even trees are planted.

Some building styles, for example, geodesic and A-frame, blur the distinction between wall and roofs. Pitched roofs are often covered with asphalt shingles (in the US and most of eastern Canada) although thatch, wood shake, steel, corrugated galvanized iron, slate and tile roofs are used elsewhere.

The following are some items to keep in mind prior to installation and during the progress of work at your property:

Cover items in the attic, due to debris that could fall during roof tear off.

We will take care to protect your shrubs and grounds. If you feel additional protection is needed, please do so by placing tarps over specific items or foliage at your discretion.

Clear driveway or parking area for access to deliver material to your roof or ground area. Our crew will also need parking available during the progress of the job.

Provide your contact phone number for the day work is scheduled.Secure dogs/animals inside or chain up during progress of the job.

Unlock gates or fences that we may need to access.

Make sure that security alarms are turned off - the vibration of roof tear-off may set the alarms off.

Let us know where electricity is accessible for us in case there is a need for it.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call or email us.
