Roofing Options
Today’s roofing options are nearly limitless. Let Boyd Roofing
help you choose the perfect one for your home.
Asphalt Shingles
The most commonly used type of shingle, today’s Asphalt shingles are reinforced with fiberglass mat or paper or wood fiber. They range in durability/life expectancy from 20 to 30 years for the ordinary (three tab) shingles.
Laminate shingles differ from “three tab” shingles in that they are made of multiple staggered layers of material. They are designed to add character, color and depth to the roof and typically last 30 to 50 years.
Wood Shakes and Shingles
Hand cut wood shakes or machine sawn wood shingles can add depth and character to your roof. Cedar is typically the wood of choice for making shingles and shakes but treated pine or spruce can also be used.
Wood roofs can last up to 30 years, but will require some maintenance. As the shingles or shakes age, they fade from a brown or reddish color to a gray and they will shrink, warp and splinter. Choose wood shingles or shakes carefully, as the risk of fire will be higher than with other options.
Slate/Stone Shingles
Slate is a dense natural rock or stone material that is nearly non-absorbent. It is collected from quarries around the world and cut to size. Despite the extra reinforcement required to install it, slate can create a rich, colorful, hand-crafted look that can exceed 75 years of service life.
Tile Roof Covering
Roof Tiles can be made in a vast variety of styles, sizes and colors. They can be made of clay, concrete or even rubber. While this type of roof requires extra reinforcement, a well-constructed clay or concrete tile roof should last more than 50 years.
Metal Roofing Shingles and Standing Seam
Metal roofing materials come in a wide variety of styles including standing seam, steel or aluminum shake shingles, metal tile, granular coated steel shingles and copper standing seam or shingles.
Recent advances in the industry have solved problems with peeling, fading or oxidizing on aluminum roofing and a granulated coating or metal shingles can almost eliminate the risks of hail damage. If properly installed, a metal roof can provide you with 30-50 years of protection for your home. Copper roofs have even been documented to last up to 100 years.
